My Story...

Hi, I'm Cymphanie, like the Orchestra!

Sweet Home Santa Barbara is where I was born and raised. Home helped me discover my passion for journalism and the camera. At the age of 17 I was asked to host the Friday local news for Youth Network Television, as well as Eyes on you. I had officially become the face of YNTV. My first day at the station butterflies filled my stomache and nervous thoughts swarmed through my mind. I began to wonder  if I was really cut out for a field in broadcast journalism. The second the red light turned on and Kris the producer yelled action, all my fears went away. Talking on camera and interacting with others exhilarates me.

EDUCATION
When I was 18 years old I made the leap from SoCal to NorCal, accepting my offer to attend CSU-Sacramento in Fall 2011. I graduated Spring of 2015 with a major in journalism and a minor in communications. Ever since I declared my major, a huge weight was lifted and suddenly I felt like I belonged. There is no longer this worry about my future career. I know what I want and now it is up to me to make it happen.

INTERNSHIPS

One of the goals I set for the year of 2013,  my junior year of college, was to work at a news station. I applied to channel 10, an ABC affiliate station. In the beginning I thought there was no way I would be the chosen one, however my persistence and passion shined through and I received an internship for Fall 2014. Walking in the news room I finally  felt like I belonged somewhere. I realized that all the hard work and dedication I put in really paid off. My internship was for the news room.

WORKING FOR ABC
My duties included working the assignment desk, attending and pitching ideas at editorial meetings, writing news stories for the station website, accompany reporters and photographers to get the scoop on different stories, as well as attend and cover press conferences and crime scenes. I also learned to edit news clips, as well as produce the morning cut-ins.

WORKING FOR NBC
During my senior year of college, I was lucky enough to recieve the top internship program in Sacramento at NBC. Since I already had experience through my time at YNTV and ABC, I was able to apply these skills to make my internship as productive as possible. My main focus was creating my own packages. This included on camera reporting, where I investigated my own stories, as well as wrote VO/SOTs. My day included going to the editorial meeting and pitching story ideas, following a photographer and reporter to a scene, conducting interviews, doing a stand up, recording my audio, as well as editing the package. KCRA gave me the opportunity to be independent and learn how to report on my own and exactly what it takes to make a news package suitable to broadcast in a time limit. I also attended many press conferences and learned how to conduct interviews and make connections with important government officials. I was able to get a better insight of what being a broadcast journalist required. Long hours, early mornings, late nights.... I'm ready!

INTERNING IN THE CAPITAL
I am honored to have had the opportunity to begin my news career in Sacramento, CA; which is a top 20 market. Interning for ABC and NBC gave my the opportunity to attend press conferences at the capital, work with top experienced reporters, attend Kings games, and cover more crime than I ever imagined. I also had the opportunity to be taught by broadcast reporter and senior editor for KQED. This is where I learned the skill of writing VO/SOTS. This has given me the ability to create my own scripts for my news packages. I also have skills in editing, investigating stories, conducting interviews, working the assignment desk, producing, as well as broadcast reporting. I feel I have reached the point that I am ready to take all of the skills I have learned and apply them as a career broadcast journalist. Even though I have started in a top 20 market, I am willing and eager to work in any market on air. As long as I am doing the career of my dreams and learning new skills, I am happy.
